Community stakeholders and local netball clubs brought good news and excitement to Ward 5 residents on Human Rights Day last week.

A field in the last phase of Extension 8 was cleared and transformed into a netball court last Wednesday, allowing the Highlanders netball club to host a tournament there, with support from the Joza Department of Social Development and the ward's councillor.

The tournament attracted social development workers, municipal councillors, the Highlanders, Lingelihle, Mighty Chiefs and Young Stars netball clubs and an audience of local residents.

The first match pitched Lingelihle against the Young Stars, and both teams appeared well trained. But Lingelihle's fast and energetic players managed to beat Young Stars 8-6.

The second match saw the Highlanders play against Lingelihle for the first time, in which the Highlanders managed to lead 4-3 by the end of the first half. The second half saw Lingelihle come out guns blazing as they attacked the Highlanders, also with an improved defence. Lingelihle won the highly entertaining match 9-6.

Ward 5 councillor Monwabisi Tame addressed the crowd gathered on the public holiday, and patted the Highlanders team on the back for showing positive efforts to make the community better, he said. He announced that the field where the netball court was erected will be made a permanent place where the sport can be played from now on.

One Highlander supporter, Thembakazi Tinise, praised the team, especially player Zikhona Skeyi who is also a provincial boxer, for the way they took to the netball courts. Skeyi inspires me a lot when she is in the ring, you can tell that she is professional boxer. Watching her play netball is also inspiring; she's so talented and motivating, Tinise said.

The tournament results:
Lingelihle beat the Young Stars 8-6.
Lingelihle beat Highlanders 9-6.
Highlanders drew with Lingelihle 10-10.
