Two professional Grahamstown boxers, Mzoxolo Ndwayana and Masonwabe Mgcuwe, say they are confident of winning their title matches at the Nyusa Boxing Promotion tournament tomorrow.
The tournament, run in conjunction with Makana Municipality, will take place at Noluthando Hall in Nompondo Street, Joza.
Two professional Grahamstown boxers, Mzoxolo Ndwayana and Masonwabe Mgcuwe, say they are confident of winning their title matches at the Nyusa Boxing Promotion tournament tomorrow.
The tournament, run in conjunction with Makana Municipality, will take place at Noluthando Hall in Nompondo Street, Joza.
Ndwayana, a left-handed welter weight, will be fighting ten rounds for the Eastern Cape title, against Jongikhaya Leve from Mdantsane. He has fought only six matches as a professional boxer, with a record of five wins and one loss.
At a training session on Tuesday, Ndwayana said that he had been preparing for the fight since the beginning of the year. “I am like a soldier in the war waiting for the battle to come any time,” he declared.
Masonwabe Mgcuwe will be boxing six rounds against Nkululeko Janjies from Uitenhage, for the junior bantam weight title. A previous win, by points, against Janjies last month has given him confidence ahead of Saturday's bout.
"I want to show the community of Grahamstown that there's nothing that will stop us until the title sleeps here," said Mgcuwe.
Both boxers and their coaches feel that this tournament will demonstrate the development, strength and depth of Grahamstown boxing.
"This is going to be the rise of boxing in Grahamstown," said Given Faxi, who is coaching Mgcuwe. Bulelani Ndwayana, who coaches his son, Mzoxolo, agreed.
Faxi added that the boxing community helps to keep children off the streets and to build social cohesion. They want the community of Grahamstown to come and support their local boxers.
