Rhodes University Sports Administration recently hosted a five-a-side soccer tournament to commemorate Heritage Month, and particularly the heritage sites in and around Grahamstown. The event, on the Rhodes Futsol field next to the Sports Admin building, targeted businesses and government departments from Grahamstown and surrounding areas.

The teams of seven players each were Makana Municipality (two teams), Fort Hare University, Oak Cottage BP, Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) and Sparta football club.

Overall winners of the five-a-side were Makana Municipality, who won R400 – each player receiving a gold medal. Second prize of R150 went to Oak Cottage BP.

Xolani Ngcikhwe, acting sports officer at Rhodes Sports Administration, said, “This was also an attempt to look at the level of interest from businesses/corporate businesses."

He said Rhodes Sport could give these departments and businesses to actively participate in sport through a special league. Six teams took part in the event, with play taking a point system format. Each team played every other team in the tournament.

Ngcikhwe said a highlight of the tournament was the match between Makana and DSRAC, with both teams going for a win.

It was Makana who eventually won and went on to play the finals against Oak Cottage BP.

Ngcikhwe said the tournament also served as part of the university's community outreach programmes on sport and community engagement. As part of the project, officials were taken on a rules crash-course for Futsal (five-a-side soccer) before they were sent on to referee the games.
