STREET CLEAN-UP… Local business are optimistic that their calls might finally have been heard. Following a spate of crime in the city centre the Grahamstown SAPS was seen setting up a mobile police station on High Street in front of Pep and Jumbo stores on Friday. In the last few months Grocott's Mail has reported on numerous criminal activities happening in the area that have made it an unsafe place to be. Ronnie Scheepers of Pep told Grocott's Mail that these criminals know the police are around and suggested it would be much better if the police wore civilian clothing. Collin Matyumza from clothing retailer Jumbo further said: "This would make a big difference if the police were here often. They should almost permanently be stationed here, and the good job they are doing should carry on and be visible." Spokesperson for the SAPS in Grahamstown, Captain Mali Govender, reported that the mobile police station would move around and operate from different parts of Grahamstown on a daily basis, and said it was more of an "operational contact point" than a permanent station.
