A local developer, Rob Beer, intends to erect a massive 1000m² SUPERSPAR (bulk shopping)that would replace the KwikSpar (smaller, everyday convenience products) behind the BP petrol station on the corner of African and Milner street.
The plan also involves moving the Tops bottle store onto the property next to the existing Spar (KwikSpar), located on Rose Street, extending it and thus allowing for a larger parking area. The current site does not have adequate parking for loading and off-loading trucks which have to park alongside African Street.
What needs to be done?
- Combine new property on Rose street with existing Spar and Tops property
- Application for rezoning to be approved
- Traffic impact study to be conducted (to ensure there will not be traffic congestion)
- Ensure there will be enough parking to accommodate good vehicles
Beer said the rezoning request was recommended by the Town Planning department and went through the municipality's Infrastructure Development Portfolio Committee (formerly known as Land and Housing Portfolio Committee).
Beer said that the committee needed more information before giving the application the nod.
The committee, according to a report, has considered the request and it looks as if the application for the rezoning will be approved – on a few conditions.
The main condition that concerns the municipality is the revision of the development plan to provide enough parking to accommodate goods vehicles, so that traffic in the surrounding streets will not be disrupted.
