The Albany District cross-country championships took place at the Rhodes University Prospect Fields last week, with most local schools sending their top pupils. The top two from each of the boys' and girls' age groups were then selected to take part in Saturday's Cacadu cross-country championships.

Among the schools represented were Kuyasa, Nomzamo, Archie Mbolekwa, NV Cewu, George Dickerson, Samuel Ntsiko, Amasango, Graeme, Victoria Primary, Dambuza Riebeeck East and DD Siwisa.

The cross-country course ran over a 2km lap route, with the younger age groups completing one lap, while the open boys completed four laps.

The event was hosted and organised by Rhodes University with help from the Department of Education.
The course was a good mix of grass running and some obstacle running across a stream, as well as a few muddy sections that saw many athletes coming to a halt or falling in the sludge, and at least one athlete lost a shoe.
