The production company behind an album launched during the National Arts Festival says that by targeting talent in the Cacadu district, they are promoting cultural dignity, social cohesion and self reliance.
“Back to Classic – Volume 3” is the name of the hip-hop compilation released by Balisto Production, in Joza street.
The album features 20 songs in English and Xhosa performed by Ayanda Mcanda, Efese Betela and Siyabonga Mkrakra.

Balisto studio manager, Betela, said the studio was a registered company.
“We worked with 25 artists who are based here in Grahamstown,” he said.
“We want to create a platform for artists in the Cacadu district to share their talent.”
Balisto artist Vezi Qangule told Grocott's Mail that Back to Classic was an inspirational mix which revealed the voice of the voiceless. “Most of us are uneducated, poor and depending on parents,” he said.
“We would like academic institutions to help us by providing bursaries and scholarships.” Mkrakra, who is also a reggae singer, said they would like support from the municipality and the community to rebuild the studio, on the basis that by promoting local talent, they were contributing to job-creation.
The new release costs R50 and is on sale at 112a Joza street.
