Rhodes University might have lost their 1st team rugby game, but they managed second place overall in the Eastern Cape Intervarsity Games. Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) won the games for the sixth consecutive year and this year’s hosts, University of Fort Hare, came third in a feast of sport that brought the top sportsmen and -women from four campuses together at Fort Hare University last weekend. Rhodes last won Intervarsity in 2005.

Rhodes last won Intervarsity in 2005.
Walter Sisulu University, after the games and the parties, was left holding the wooden spoon at the bottom of the log. Although the final results are still being tallied, the results for the Rhodes University contingent so far available are as follows:
The Rhodes 1st hockey side broke a five-year losing streak to NMMU. They won a close game 2-1. The men’s second hockey team lost 2-1.
Rhodes won the tennis, but didn't do as well in the table tennis, coming third overall. The women’s first squash team won and, after a hard battle on the squash court, the men managed second place.
The women's waterpolo side blasted their way past NMMU, registering a 6-1 win, while the men fought hard for a 4-4 draw. The women's volleyball team also had no challengers, taking 1st place in the overall standings. The men's volleyball team had to settle for second place, after Fort Hare.
While Rhodes struggled in the mentally challenging sports, managing third place overall in the chess, their dancers showed they could boogie. They took pole position in dance sport.
The cricket team had to forfeit their game due to problems with transport arrangements. NMMU won the final game against Fort Hare by 69 runs.
Rhodes soccer had a great run, making it through to the final after beating hosts Fort Hare, for the first time in three years, in the semis, 3-2. They lost 2-0 to Walter Sisulu in the final.
Rhodes University were represented in 18 of the 20 sports codes involved in this year's Intervarsity.
