Harcourts Real Estate in Grahamstown bought the Ward 3 Soup Kitchen a R400 voucher for groceries from Fruit and Veg City to honour Mandela Day on Monday.

Founded in May by Chesley Daniels in Vergenoeg, it is operated from a house on 26 Beydon Street on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2 and 3 pm, catering for almost 300 impoverished and hungry children and adults in the community.

Daniels sees the Soup Kitchen as a ray of hope, and hopes that by feeding the community he will be able to alleviate crime in the community, as well as keeping hungry stomachs full and healthy in the Grahamstown winters.

Although Daniels has received many donations, the initiative has no fixed financial sponsorship as of yet. He feels that the popularity and positive impact of the Soup Kitchen in his community will create more support from businesses and individuals in Grahamstown.

If you would like to get involved with volunteering or donating to the Ward 3 Soup Kitchen, Daniels can be contacted on 074 680 1934 or on chesley.daniels@yahoo.com.
