The ruling party's Makana candidates for the upcoming local government elections would follow the party's manifesto to the letter, promised community, rural development and land reform minister Gugile Nkwinti at a meeting in Grahamstown on Sunday.

Addressing around 150 ANC members and residents in the Extension 9 Community Hall, Nkwinti expressed his faith in the ANC candidates, who were being officially introduced to the community. “We have selected them because we hope they will serve people,” Nkwinti said.

“Our manifesto considered that there are things which should be done better." A resident told Nkwinti that the ANC should bring free education to the youth and adults. He said he was poor because he didn't have a job.

Another resident suggested that the municipality start a cleaning project for Extension 9 residents, to clear dumpsites. Nkwinti said the ANC had started to be transparent and welcomed the residents' interaction with the party.

He advised ANC volunteers to go to the residents and admit to whatever they said about the ANC, because they [the residents]would be telling the truth. The party's Ward 5 councillor candidate, Monwabisi Tame, said his main aim was to unify the residents in the ward. “I promise that I will try my best to do what ever they [residents]say.”
