The Azanian People’s Organisation (Azapo) says the forthcoming local government elections will present local communities with an opportunity to take back their power and ensure that councillors prioritise their needs.

In a media statement released this week, the party said the thrust of its election manifesto was empowering communities to reclaim power by choosing councillors who had their interests at heart. The manifesto goes into detail about the need to rid society of what it calls ANC corruption and says unresponsive councillors must go, along with the ANC's policy of cadre deployment.

Phakamisa Zathu, Azapo regional chairman in the Cacadu district, repeated the party's call for provincial governments to be scrapped, saying they were a waste of both financial and human resources. "Local government need to be strengthened so as to deliver quality service to its citizens in their communities," Zathu said.

He attributed the recent spate of service delivery protests to the ruling party's failure to improve the lives of Makana residents in the past five years.

"It is for this reason that Azapo is putting forward the following competent and knowledgeable candidates who know what it means to struggle alongside the masses:"
