Councillor candidate for Ward 5, Luyanda Nase, caused a commotion among residents in Extension 9 hall last Friday, when he announced that a tar road would be constructed there next month.
Four ANC candidates were put to the test by around 100 of the Ward 5 constituency they hope to represent as councillors after the coming municipal election.
ANC executive member in the Makana subregion, Lazola Maneli, told the meeting that after the public airing, a screening committee would nominate two candidates to forward to the party's regional deployment committee, who would narrow it down to one.
Once the regional executive committee had endorsed that candidate, they would be presented to the ward as the ANC's choice. Nase, Mongameli Mtolo, Nomboniso Funani and Monwabisi Tame were asked about the changes they would implement in the next three years.
Service delivery was the promise of Mtolo, who told the crowd that he was going to change things around and make sure residents were satisfied. His vision was to see Grahamstown develop, Mtolo said.
Specifically, he aimed to develop soccer fields and give land to residents for farming. Funani said when one was a councillor one had to understand problems which affected the community. She told the crowd that she would be available to them and would not leave the ward after being elected. She advised children to start groups and use their skills.
Experience in the ward was Tame's main selling point. He told the residents that he had been elected into the area's street committee in 2009 and promised to take the ward to a higher standard. He said service delivery should be improved as soon as possible.
Maneli said he would like to see councillors who were generous in spirit ruling the area, as the ANC had a role to play in uniting people. In addition to his promise of a tar road, Nase told residents that he would also fix the cracks in Extension 9 houses.
Responding to a question about lack of educational institutions in the area, Nase said he would make sure that the area had a big preparatory school by 2013.
