All the top five positions were elected unopposed. Vuyani Kolisi is the new chairperson and Andile Qangule is his deputy. Luyanda Sakata was elected secretary, Noluthando Santi his deputy and Zodwa Cetu treasurer.
Ten additional members were also elected, including Gideon Mapapu, Wala Madinda, Simthembile Mamani, Xolani Booi, Mzukisi Rooi, Nomakhaya Mtati and Nosipho Faltein. Four candidates who will stand for the position of ward councillor were nominated.
Kolisi and Qangule top the list, after they each received 36 votes. Faltein received 33 votes and was followed by Thuleka Ngeleza, who received 32. Regional Executive Committee (REC) member Lazola Maneli reminded members about the kind of leader the ANC needed.
“We want leaders who will unite the organisation and who are disciplined and humble leaders,” said Maneli. She said that a list would be prepared for the Regional Deployment Committee, and the committee would recommend a preferred candidate to the Provincial Deployment Committee.
“After all these processes have been followed, the province will then make the final decision,” said Scara Njadayi, another REC member. Six members were nominated to stand as Proportional Representation councillors in the Cacadu District Municipality: Nodidi Maselana (49 votes), followed by Vumile Lwana (35), Ndumiso Madinda (29), Phumelele Kate (9), Dumisani Zono (7) and Zamuxolo Peter (6).
Chairperson-elect, Kolisi, told Grocott's Mail that his priority was to sit down with his executive and come up with a programme that would help the branch to be vibrant. “We want to unite the people and serve the community," explained Kolisi. “We will form street committees to make the flow of information easy."
He acknowledged the challenges that the ward faced, saying because the ward was a combination of two former wards, they would alternate meeting venues between B.B Zondani Hall and Tantyi Hall. “We want to win back the confidence of our people and, by working together with the community, we can do more,” he said.
