Ngamani Joseph Mpetile, the last director-general of education in the former Ciskei homeland before the 1994 democratic elections, died peacefully of natural causes on 27 November 2010 at the East London Private Hospital.

Ngamani Joseph Mpetile, the last director-general of education in the former Ciskei homeland before the 1994 democratic elections, died peacefully of natural causes on 27 November 2010 at the East London Private Hospital.

A staunch member of the Methodist Church in Grahamstown, Mpetile was also a keen fan of rugby and boxing, having participated in both sports in his youth. Mpetile had a Master's degree from the University of Fort Hare, which he obtained in the early nineties.

During his career he had been a principal at the following schools in the Ciskei: Jabavu High School in Alice, Zwelimjongile High School in Debe Nek and Zimlindile High School in Tamara Location near King William's Town.

He also worked as an assistant school inspector in the Peddie district. He is survived by his wife and children. He will be buried tomorrow in Grahamstown.
