South Africans who obtain a heavy duty driver's licence will no longer be allowed to drive a light motor vehicle from February.

This follows amendments to road traffic laws and will apply only to licences issued after 31 January 2011. The Department of Transport said that when current licence-holders renewed their licences, they would have the same driving privileges that applied to their original licences.

A general learner’s licence was also being considered. This would allow a driver to apply for a second licence category, without having to acquire a second learner’s licence. Holders of two categories of licence would not be required to carry two different licence cards. One licence card would be endorsed with the necessary authorisations. – BuaNews
