A general worker from Victoria Girls (VG) High School is still in custody after a rape case was opened against him by a Rhodes University student who is a student supervisor at VG's Beaufort House hostel.

VG's headmistress Madeleine Schoeman said that the incident was reported to have happened at the beginning of the term in October. According to Schoeman the alleged rape occurred in the morning at the Beaufort House hostel while the learners were at school. "The accused said that it was consensual sex," added Schoeman.

The accused, who is said to be a father of two and the family's breadwinner, decided to resign straight after the accusations were made. A member of the school's governing body, Buks Coetze said, "We were meant to have a disciplinary hearing, but before it could happen the accused opted for resignation."

The student who laid the charge is supported by the university and is still working at the Beaufort House hostel. Police spokesperson Mali Govender said that a rape case was opened at the Grahamstown police station. The accused has appeared in the Magistrate's Court and the case is under investigation.
