Way back in the 70s, Brausch Niemann, a local Kawasaki dealer, took a group of friends trail riding in the Winterhoek mountains around the Elands Valley behind Uitenhage, and the oldest enduro event on the national circuit was born.
Way back in the 70s, Brausch Niemann, a local Kawasaki dealer, took a group of friends trail riding in the Winterhoek mountains around the Elands Valley behind Uitenhage, and the oldest enduro event on the national circuit was born.
The original route was marked out using handfuls of bread flour to mark turns, and the riders often finished the event well after dark. With the boom in motorcycle sales in the early 80s, came the first record of over 100 entries.
Castrol South Africa has been the official sponsor of the Winterberg for the past 35 years, and has been committed to making this event the best-run event on the national calendar. Along with the officials of the Rover Motorcycle Club, they piece together a well-marked and challenging route that the riders can enjoy and will keep them coming back year after year.
This year’s Castrol Winterberg will start at the PPC grounds outside Hankey. The event also caters for spectators who would like to see their share of the action with several spectator points and special stages. This year's event focuses mainly on areas around the Loerie Ruskamp with great special stages and spectator points.
The event will be run on 16 October starting at 8am at the PPC Hall. Riders wishing to compete in the club or novice class would have to join the Rover Club and then take a club competition licence in order to compete in the event. Go to: www. rovermcc.co.za for more.
