The second round of the East Cape Shotokan Ryu and Rhodes University Shotokan League was held at The Hangar on Rhodes University campus last week Saturday. The women’s open kata(forms) category was won by Lisa Wagner (Kowie Karate Academy) with Bongi Mbangeli (Albany Karate Academy) in second place.

The women’s open kumite (fighting) final was contested by Bongi Mbangeli (Albany Karate Academy) and Anneke Odendaal from Adelaide Karate Academy with Mbangeli emerging as the winner.
Rhodes Shotokan Karateka, Kamo Bodibe achieved a double gold in the senior men’s white to blue belt kata and kumite categories.
Rickus Paul of the Kowie Karate Academy was placed second in the kata category while Devron Hoffman of Albany Karate Academy as the runner up in the kumite category.
The senior men’s open Rhodes University Cycling Club It’s just under seven weeks to go until the Makana Brick Grocott’s Cycle Tour 2010!
Already the days are getting longer (and hopefully warmer) meaning it’s a little easier to get out on the bike and put in some solid training for this years event.
There has already been an increase in the number of cyclists heading out on the road, hopefully the training and nutrition tips provided in Grocott’s Mail over the last few weeks have helped make your winter training more effective than before.
As mentioned before, Grocott’s Mail will be publishing a week-by-week training guide over the next seven weeks to ensure your best performance on the big day.
Three programmes will be printed each week, accounting for beginner, intermediate and advanced cyclists.
The programmes will be focused on those who are aiming at completing the full 80.4km race, but for those who are settling for the 34km option or simply kumite category was a closely contested event which included a number of exciting and hard fought bouts.
The final match was a battle between the experienced Mzwandile Matebese (Joza Karate Academy) and 15-year-old Nolan De Maar (Albany Karate Academy).
At the final bell, and with neither fighter having been able to seize the advantage and score, the match went into a sudden death extension.
At the end of the extension, and with the scores still tied at 0-0, the judges awarded the fight to De Maar by the narrowest of margins.
The senior men’s open kata category saw a reversal of positions with Matebese placing first and De Maar in second place.
