This date has changed from12 August to 5 August at 6pm because the organisers want to give the finalists time to prepare for the inter-varsity games that will take place at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in a few weeks’ time.
There are 13 Rhodes finalists five women and eight men which were chosen from among many different sports stars at Rhodes.
The candidate who will be selected as a winner will have to have the following qualities: a positive, organised person who is outgoing and able to encourage others to take part in sport; who is capable of public speaking; able to work with different people; involved and interested in sport as a whole; a team player; an outgoing and friendly personality; active service in Rhodes sports clubs; be prepared to have their photo displayed at sports admin and be able to balance academics and sport.
Kuiper hopes that there will be a high attendance rate this year, as the special guest, Mzwandile Sticks a former Springboks Sevens captain is a well known person and much admired. “Last year the attendance rate was really low,” she says.
The event is sponsored by PG Glass, Capitec Bank, Red Bull, Grocott’s Mail and Circus Jugglers. The winner of the competition will be expected to take on an ambassadorial role, play a role at the Sports Awards, be present at Sports Admin functions like the chairpersons cocktail and be involved in Inter- Varsity events.
The function will take place at OMP Lounge at the Sports Admin building. Tickets cost R30 and are available at Sports Admin.
There will be a cash bar available and free snacks. The 13 semi-finalists are: Roxy Fietze (squash), Caroline Ross (athletics), Adele Street (rowing), AJ Elkington (hockey), Jacques de Villiers (squash), Anesu Chingono (soccer), Sean Thackarey (hockey), MarkVorster (pool), Donovan Kennedy (canoe), Jonty Koekemoer (tennis), Lianne Riley (athletics), Zane Watkins (athletics) and Steven Green (rowing).
