The Gijima Sport ‘n Leisure and U15 Football tournament got under way at JD Dlepu stadium last weekend.
On Saturday, the first round of the tournament began with the last ten teams of the local league playing against each other while the top three teams Mighty Chiefs, Future Stars and Killers got a bye in the first round.

On A field, fifth placed City Pirates faced New Town City who are at the bottom of the log. Pirates dominated most of the early stages of the game and lead most of the game by 2-0, however after hard fought attacks going forward, New Town City came back into the game after scoring two equalising goals.
After the game ended in a two all draw, the sides went on to shoot penalty kicks, where Pirates won 8-7
thanks to a missed penalty by New Town goalie.
In B field Future Stars whalloped twelfth placed Fighters by four goals to one. Eleven Attackers took on Lingelihle on A field.
Lingelihle had the Attackers side right where they wanted them in the early stages that they were awarded a goal which put them in a lead.
However, the powerful Attackers strike force claimed two goals to win the match 2-1. On B field Chelsea overpowered the Sakhulutsha side by four goals to one.
In the last match of the first round on A field City Angels went head on with Italy. After trailing behind by 2-0 throughout the match, Italy showed Angels how the game could turn around and scored two equalising goals before netting in a winning goal later in the second half.
The game ended City Angels 2-3 Italy. On Sunday JD Dlepu saw the winning teams competing
in the quarter finals together with the three top teams in the league.
Mighty Chiefs who share the same points with log leaders Killers (separated by a goal margin), faced the biggest team in local football, Eleven Attackers.
In the 22nd minute Attackers went on a full attack where Siyamthemba Melithafa fooled the Chiefs goalie -who was way off his line- with a volley making it 1-0.
Four minutes later Chiefs were granted a penalty after a handball was spotted in the 18 yard area and Sinethemba Mthwisha brought the equalizer.
Before half time a tricky bounce in front of goals almost tricked the keeper and defence who managed to clear the ball.
In the 2nd half Chiefs came back asking questions at Attackers. Twelve minutes into second half, Chiefs’ Xolisa Ncula put his side in the lead once more, scoring from a brilliant run through the Attackers defence.
The remaining games saw a medley of braces produced by individual players. Lusindiso Mentjies of Italy scored the two goals that beat Future Stars 2-0.
City Pirates forward Khanyisa Jela netted two goals for his side when they beat third placed Junior Stars by 2-0.
Log leaders Killers signed their name on the semis after beating Chelsea by 2-0 thanks to Olwethu Fleck’s brace.
On Saturday City Pirates will face Young Killers, while Mighty Chiefs will go toe to toe with Italy in the semis from where the two winners will face each other on Sunday in the finals of the tournament.
