On Tuesday 22 June, the MEC officially opened this exhibition by Eastern Cape artists at the Albany History Museum.
The message of getting up and actually doing it for yourself was the main focus of the opening, where the MEC communicated her appreciation of the arts.
Tom encouraged the youth to start being involved in art projects like this in order to be exposed in the Eastern Cape.
She said that the department does not have enough funding, but did promise that if artists want to approach the department with a project funding might be given to them.
Tom also said the public should not take artists for granted and that young people should start being responsible and making the right decisions.
She briefly discussed issues facing the youth, such as drug abuse. “All the artists from the Eastern Cape have done a great job.
I am very proud of you: keep up the good work,” she said with excitement. After viewing the art, Tom was amazed by the quality of work and said, “I can feel what the artists are feeling through their artwork.
I urge everyone to come and see this exhibition.” The exhibition will run daily from 9am to 4pm until 4 July.
