The second alcohol testing evidence centre in the country opened in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro at the beginning of June.

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has teamed up with South African Breweries, the SAPF and the Department of Safety and Liaison to ensure that blood tests for drunken drivers are conducted quickly and efficiently.

Aimed at benefitting the people of the province and bringing criminals to justice, the new centre has been built to service the entire province while other similar centres will soon be built in East London and Mthatha.

“For the Department, the establishment of this Alcohol Testing Evidence Centre will ensure no more inefficient and infective blood testing, significant reduction in processing time of blood samples for all cases, no more lost or damaged evidence, significant increase in convictions of drunken drivers,” said Ncedo Kumbaca of the Department of Transport.

Kumbaca added at least 85% of those charged are expected to admit guilt, while at least 95% of cases contested in court are expected to be won.

“The Department calls on all road users not to drink alcohol and drive or walk near roads as that will increase  accidents and cause harm to others and even those who are intoxicated,” said Kumbaca.
