The Makana Traffic department, in conjunction with the department of Transport, held its first Driver of the Year competition in over 20 years.
The competition was for the truck category. Under the supervision of Denzil Rooi, the successful event took place in the Shoprite parking area.

While 48 entries were received before the competition took place, 22 motorists took part. The overall winner was Jeremy Thomas of the Makana Health Department.
He said the aim of the competition is to reduce traffic accidents and fuel consumption, as “less speed means the further you go”.
A number of categories were held within the truck competition, with a total of eight motorists chosen to represent Makana at the next stage.
These eight locals will head off to the inter district competition. From here, the winners will take part in the provincial competition before heading off to the national event.
The competition for the truck drivers started with a yard test, with Rooi adding that this was not the normal yard test, as obstacles had been added for the drivers.
Among other events, they were tested on the manner of turning as well as reversing. From here, a pre-trip inspections carried out, before heading into the streets of Grahamstown for the driver’s test.
“The Makana Council thanks all participants and congratulates the eight winners who now go to the inter district event, and wish then all the best,” said Rooi.
