The annual countrywide celebration of science, National Science Week (NSW) takes place from 2 to 7 August this year.
All nine provinces in the country participate in NSW and this year, a highlight of the Makana’s NSW will be the Take a Learner to Work Day, aimed at introducing pupils to the real-world challenges in the workplace.

The Makana National Science Week Alliance is the committee that organises local activities for the week in the Makana area.
The committee consists of a collaboration between the Grahamstown District Department of Education, South African Environmental Observation Network (Elwandle Node), Scifest Africa, a project of the Grahamstown Foundation, and the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity.
The theme for this year’s NSW is “The role of science in economic development.” The objective of NSW is to contribute to Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) among various sections of the population and inform educators and learners about careers in the sciences.
The Take a Learner to Work Day initiative is aimed at both exposing learners to careers in SET and motivating them in their studies to increase pass rates.
The Makana National Science Week Alliance is inviting businesses in and around Grahamstown to host a Grade 11 learner at their respective workplaces on Wednesday 4 August.
This involves collecting a learner from the Department of Education Resource Centre in Milner Street at 8.30am and returning him/her at 4pm that afternoon.
Both learners and employees/employers are encouraged to make the most of this exercise and talk and learn as much as possible in the workplace.
