Ready for the final

We are now just days away from the start of the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup and in the build up to this event Bafana Bafana and all the other competing teams have been involved in incredibly intensive training programmes aimed at preparing them in every way possible, to ensure that they have the best chance possible of getting to the final.

In a similar manner to the football teams’ preparation, as Christians, we too need to be in intensive, strict training to prepare us for our final, the time when we meet face-to-face with our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.

Paul writing to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 9:25) confirms this need: “Everybody who competes in the games goes into strict training.

They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” Paul also tells us the areas that our preparations should address in verses 26 to 27.

“Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”

As you watch and enjoy the World Cup and cheer on Bafana Bafana don’t forget to keep to your own spiritual training regime so that you too can win the everlasting crown.
