Nolan De Maar, a member of Grahamstown’s Albany Karate Academy has been selected to represent South Africa at the ninth zone 6 Karate Union Championships.

The championships will take place in Harare, Zimbabwe on 29 May. De Maar’s selection came after he was placed second in the cadet boys 14/15 years 70kg kumite (fighting) category at the Karate South Africa (KSA) Protea Trials. The Protea Trials were held in Bloemfontein on 19 and 20 March.

This is the third time that De Maar has been selected to represented the Junior Protea Karate Team. In 2008 he won a silver medal while representing South Africa in the team kumite category in Edinburgh, Scotland at the Commonwealth Karate Championships.

De Maar began his karate training in 2004 under the guidance of Gary Grapentin at the then newly formed Albany Karate Academy.

He is currently in Grade 9 at Mary Waters Secondary School and an assistant instructor at the Albany Karate Academy.

De Maar is also currently preparing for his junior black belt grading which will be conducted by Shihan Koos Burger (8th dan black belt) on 15 May.
