The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) strike has been called off after the union reached an agreement with the South African Local Government Association (Salga) on Wednesday.

Makana Samwu chairperson Wandile Bikitsha said Salga agreed to give a nine-month back payment on salaries and that new salary scales would be implemented from July 1.

Municipal workers are expected to report for duty tomorrow. Grahamstown's streets are still filled with rubbish which was strewn around by striking Samwu members.

The entrance to the municipal offices was clogged up with rubbish, as was the traffic department, which was forced to close while the strike continued.
