If you are having difficulty with all the university jargon such as BA, BSc and BComm, speak to the university’s student bureau. Simply call them and ask them all the questions you need to.
It is their job to help you so do not be afraid. Once you have decided on your degree choice, you need to decide where you want to study.
In Grahamstown we are lucky because Rhodes is right on our doorstep. But for the more ambitious there are 16 other universities and a large number of degree-offering institutions to choose from.
Funding also needs to be decided on. Are your parents going to pay for your studies or do you need financial aid or a bursary?
You also need to decide where you are going to stay while you are studying. At this stage it is important to look at the funds you have available so that you can determine whether you will staying at home, in residence or in digs.
Applying
Always apply to more than one university or tertiary institution. You need a back-up plan in case the first university you choose does not accept you.
Application forms can be obtained from the university or by downloading them from the university’s website.
You could also contact the university of your choice and request them to send you an application form. Remember that there is an application fee involved when applying. It ranges from R100 to R300 depending on what university you apply to

university applications is 30 September 2010. You can contact the other universities to find out when their application deadline is.
Simply call 1023 and ask forthe contact details for the university you are looking for. Ensure that you submit all the documentation that the application form asks for.
Work hard and wait
With all the administrative work out of the way, now is the time for you to wait for your application to be approved.
During this time, especially in your matric year, you need to work hard on your studies. Even if that means that you need to sacrifice spending time with your friends. Also do not hesitate to ask your teachers for help with your school work.
They are there to help you but cannot do anything unless you ask. Your final exam results need to be posted to the university as soon as you have them. You need a minimum of 40 Swedish points for your application to be considered. So get to work!
