The circle has two vehicle lanes and pavements have also been constructed for pedestrians. Construction to the circle began in August last year and while the roads around the circle are complete, Aurecon Consulting Engineers are still on site.
The construction included the closure of the original link from Pear Lane into Cradock Road being closed. Another link from Pear Lane has since been constructed further up Cradock Road.
The link from Somerset Street into Worcester Street (towards the DSG side) was also demolished, with the link from Cradock Road being reconstructed, which is still taking place.
Construction of the R3.5-million traffic circle is funded by the provincial Department of Roads and Transport as the road is part of a provincial road through Grahamstown that leads to other towns and beyond.
The project arose out of an initiative from St Andrew’s College two years ago to look at how the safety of Grahamstown’s pedestrians could be improved.
