The Frans Erasmus U13 rugby and netball tournament, hosted by PJ Olivier, kicked off with excellent goals and
speedy tries. Schools from as far as Worcester North in the Western Cape travelled to Grahamstown to take part in the tournament. Local schools present were Graeme College, PJ Olivier and Victoria Primary, as well as a Grahamstown invitational rugby side. Other schools came from the surrounding areas in the Eastern Cape.

The netball court was filled with encouraging mothers urging their girls to stand their ground. The energy was war-like as these young girls battled it out to score goals.

In the one netball match between PJ Olivier and Setlaarspark, the two teams grabbed every opportunity they could get.

PJ Olivier fought Setlaarspark with all they had but in the end the opposing team won 14-4. The rugby showcased some of the best young talent.

Hangklip proved to have a promising team on both the Friday and Saturday. After a defensive attempt by PJ Olivier, Hangklip beat them by 20 points. The trophy for the strongest rugby side went to Jeffrey’s Bay while the player of the tournament was from the Worcester North side.

Over 40 games of U13 rugby and over 20 U13 hockey matches took place on the PJ campus on Friday and Saturday, with the tournament ending with a warm up match for the 1st team before the Namibia tour in which they went on to beat the Linkside 1st team in a great victory for the PJ 1sts.

The PJ 1st team hockey and netball sides also played warm up fixtures against Alexandria and Victoria Girls’ High School respectively.

Tournament organiser, Manie Cronje of PJ said the event was a great success with many sponsors coming on board. The event was a fundraiser towards the schools sports tour to Namibia in June.

The Frans Erasmus Tournament is held every year and is a social event on all the local school’s calenders. With traditional boerewors,  hamburgers, snacks and music, it was guaranteed that everyone present enjoyed it thoroughly.
