For learners and their parents, a new school year means new uniforms, stationery and equipment, which is often difficult to finance after the holiday season.

Funeka Mvubu, a parent, said uniforms are expensive regardless of where you buy them. "Although uniforms are expensive we have no choice but to make sure that our children look their best," she said.

Uniform and stationery shops are experiencing their busiest period of the year this month since learners are preparing to start the new year with a fresh look. The manager of Birch’s in High Street, Peter Locke said that sales are up and that the shop is "extremely busy" this month as parents are preparing their children for a new academic year.

Although some parents are peturbed by uniform prices some are content with what they get. "I am satisfied by the prices and I buy my children’s school from Pep Stores every year," says proud parent Priscilla Meintjies.

Most stores said they have retained the same prices as last year whilst others have a slight increase in the prices of stationery.

Pep Stores branch manger Ronnie Scheepers said: "Our clothing prices are still the same as last year on school uniforms, but we have a little bit of increase on stationery prices. Pep Stores knows that people are struggling and we want to give the best prices for our customers," he said.
