The First City Combat Rifle Shoot took place on Saturday at the Grahamstown Military Base shooting range, which is under the control of 6 SAI Battalion.

This was the third annual Combat Rifle Shoot, with the 71 shottists competing in A, B and X class as well as civilian and junior categories.

This was the third annual Combat Rifle Shoot, with the 71 shottists competing in A, B and X class as well as civilian and junior categories.

The A class was open to senior shottists with open eye sight, B class was for less experienced shottists and the X class was open to shottists shooting with scopes.

The prizegiving function took place at the Regimental Drill Hall after the shooting event. Shottists taking part in the shoot were from across the country.

Teams which took part in the champs were Regiment Piet Retief, South African Police Service, Port Elizabeth and Aliwal North branches, First City, The Buffalo Volunteer Rifles and the Infantry School.

Shottists awarded gold medals for winning the various categories were Lieutenant colonel Roger Keeton (De Wet Decoration – DWD, Reserve Distinction – RD), Lt Col Frikkie Greeff (RD), MWO Craig Brown Military Merit Medal – MMM, John Chard Decoration – JCD), Lt Ronny Koert, Major Elton Stone and Warrant officer 2 Popsie Coetzee.

Champion Shottist, winning the Dewar Challenge Shield – Staff Sergeant Francois Marais (First City)
X Class Champion – Rifleman Estelle Viljoen (First City)
A Class Champion, winning The Inns of Court RV Cup – Staff Sergeant Francois Marais (First City)
B Class Champion, winning The Ash-Will Floating Trophy – Mark Hiles
Masters Champion, winning the FCV Challenge Cup – Lietenant Colonel Morris Lavin (First City)
Veterans Champion, winning The Frank Fisk Shooting Trophy – Staff Sergeant Francois Marais
Womens Champion, winning the Robert Hamilton Memorial Challenge Cup – Rifleman Estelle Viljoen
Junior Champion – Jonke Keaton
Civilian Champion – Stephen Marais
Winning the First City Challenge Vase – First City.
