A veterans soccer tournament took place at JD Dlepu Stadium on Saturday for those over the age of 35.

Tisco Mati, sports organiser at the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture said the event was held to give residents over the age of 35 a chance of playing soccer as many are too old to play for local soccer clubs.

Mati said the department hopes to hold a veteran netball tournament, as well as soccer at the next event which will take place in Port Alfred in the next few weeks.

There are also plans to have a veteran rugby tournament in Grahamstown in December. In total, six teams from Ndlambe and Makana took part in last Saturday’s tournament, with the two municipal areas coming up against each other in various 7-a-side matches.

The day ended with a full 11-a-side soccer match with Ndlambe winning the match. Mati said last week’s event was very successful, considering it was the first one of its kind in the area.

He said residents were very excited of getting involved. Mati said his department will now select a side from the Makana players to take part in a soccer match against the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality side in December.

Mati said there are plans to include a veteran section in the Come and Play programme, which is held during the December holidays for children.

He hoped this would encourage youngsters to play alongside the veterans and also get advice from the veterans.
