Rhodes University men’s and women’s basketball sides were crowned champions of the Eastern Province Basketball Leagues after winning their finals in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

The Rhodes men first beat PE College in the semi finals to proceed to the finals of the league. They came up against NMMU in the final and went on to beat them.

The women faced PE College in their final and went on to win this match. Rhodes basketball coach, Tisco Mati said the women have won the league since 2004, while the men have won the league since 2006.

Mati said that as the league champions they are now hoping to play in the club championships next year, where they will represent their league.

Mati said the Rhodes Basketball Club and the Makana Sona basketball club players will now be training towards the South African basketball trials. Mati said that six men and two women from the two clubs, will take part in the trials.
