A fire broke out at the Carlton Centre (Checkers and Mr Price building) on High Street this morning. Firemen responded swiftly and damage to the building was minimal. No-one was injured.

"The fire started at the back alley where we keep our boxes. There’s an electric wire in there so it might have exploded or somebody might have thrown a cigarette stub through the grated gate. We are just speculating at this time," said Mr Price assistant manager, Lisa Du Plessis.

Business continued as usual at Checkers supermarket. "The store is not affected as such, it is only the back offices that we had to evacuate people," said Werner Fischer of Checkers.

Mr Price was not as fortunate. "Everything is damaged here because of the smoke; no one will want to buy clothes that smell of smoke," said Du Plessis.
