A female Rhodes student who was getting into her car in a residential area was allegedly accosted by an unknown attacker on Wednesday, 5 August. The man forced his way into her car, and threatened the young student with a screwdriver before instructing her to drive towards township. It is alleged that he forced her into the backseat of her car, where he attempted to rape her.

According to a statement issued by Rhodes University, the woman convinced her attacker to let her drive to a nearby ATM to draw money for him. The man jumped out of the car at the Kingswood College traffic circle, catching the attention of a security guard stationed outside the school.

The security guard gave chase and, according to Hi-Tec supervisor Thembani Gqaboti, he was apprehended near African Street.

The man was arrested by the SAPS and charged with attempted rape and possession of drugs.

    Safety tips
Rhodes University has issued a statement advising students that they should be "particularly vigilant and observant when getting into their vehicles." The SAPS website warns that when parking or driving you should keep the doors of your vehicle locked and the windows closed at all times. It is suggested that you keep to well-lit areas where there are people.

Also, have your keys in your hand as you approach your car, especially if they are difficult to find in your handbag. Should you find yourself in a similar position, the SAPS recommends that you do not resist, especially if the assailant has a weapon.
