St Andrew’s College 1st rugby side played its last game of the season on Lower field and required special effort to come up against Dale College.

“The boys stood up to the challenge and managed a well deserved and uplifting victory,” said Harley Searle, 1st team assistant rugby coach.St Andrew’s had a good start to the game when they kicked off, putting Dale under pressure when receiving and as a result turned over the ball.

They were then able to recycle it very quickly and sent the ball out wide, with Grant Macdonald scoring in the first minute. This was followed by another try by Dane van der Westhuizen 10 minutes into the game.

With a number of changes to the St Andrew’s side there was a lack of continuity in the first half. Despite having much of the possession and placing Dale under a lot of pressure, they were not able to make the most of the scoring opportunities.

Ian Donald put over a penalty for St Andrew’s and in the middle of the second half Dale Austin scored a converted try, giving them an 18–10 lead.

St Andrew’s were pushing hard for another try to seal the game when Dale managed to pick up an intercept try from within their half which they converted. The final score was St Andrew’s 18 and Dale 17.
