Drunken DJ causes havoc at Radio G

Tokwe hosts the late night show on Sundays. This Sunday he didn’t arrive in time for the show and Makhaya Mzongwana, known as My Man, took over the slot on his behalf. Spanky Faku said that Tokwe demanded to do the show when he arrived and started beating Mzongwana up.

“Eugene left everything upside down at the station. He went to the station under the influence of alcohol, he beat My Man up, tore the sound proofing apart and broke the headphones. All that time he was claiming that the station is his,” Faku said.

Luvuyo Mjekula, a frequent Radio G listener, was listening to his favourite station when he was suddenly alarmed by Mzongwana pleading to his listeners to call the police.

“At first I thought that he was joking but he kept on asking. I could sense panic in his voice. I then tried calling the police myself but the 10111 number would not go through.”

He said they played music after that but Mzongwana would interrupt the songs, urging his listeners to please call the police.

 “What I found strange was that while the music was playing you could hear an argument in the background,” Mjekula said.

Tokwe denied all the claims made by Faku. He said he and Mzongwana had had a small misunderstanding. He said that he went to the station to give CDs to another DJ that he had asked to do the show.

“I was shocked to find him (Mzongwana) there because I had arranged with someone else to do the show because I knew I was not going to be able to do it,” Tokwe said.

He did not want to get into details as to what happened next but denied breaking any of the station’s equipment.

“I was not arrested, the police came and they took me home,” added Tokwe.

The police officer that was on duty at the time was not available to confirm this.

Faku said that the station management and the board were meeting to discuss Tokwe’s situation at the station.
