STAFF REPORTER Amathole District Municipality has appointed a professional service provider to upgrade Fort Beaufort’s water Bulk Supply Scheme. The project entails upgrading the capacity of the treatment plant, bulk pipelines and building storage and command reservoirs. It’s estimated the work will take 18-24 months and is expected to start in May 2021. President Cyril Ramaphosa visited Fort Beaufort on 7 April for a commemoration of the 150th anniversary of human rights campaigner Charlotte Maxeke’s birth. A couple were left traumatised and an American tourist managed to escape after five men robbed a farm in Alicedale last night Wednesday 14 April shortly after 7pm. South African Police Service spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the couple, in their late 40s, were having supper with the US visitor when the men entered their home. Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister Dr Blade Nzimande, has welcomed the establishment of a new School of Climate Studies at Stellenbosch University, which will be officially launched in June. On Sunday 11 April two residents of eNkanini received indigenous trees for their gardens. The recipients, Manezi Mcuba and Likhaya Willie, met two donors, Helen Collett and Richard Davis from Cape Town, and together they prepared the holes and planted a tree in each recipient’s garden.  Up to 10 trees would be planted in each garden during the next week, and 3-5 more recipients will be presented with 10 trees each in the following weeks, said environmental activist Willem Coetzer.  Collett and Davis have made a contribution to the establishment of a small-scale tree nursery initiated by Mcuba and Coetzer.…

Makhanda’s Shakespeare Society usually meets about eight times a year to enjoy Shakespeare’s plays in a variety of ways. “We read them together, watch video productions, hear lectures, and teach them  in schools,” explains co-ordinator Lynette Paterson. Alcohol and substance abuse contribute to gender based violence (GBV) and so a three-day anti-GBV blitz in Makhanda and Port Alfred focused not only on education and awareness, but also targeted liquor outlets. The South African Police Service operation was held this weekend, 9-11 April 2021, targeting GBV, drug peddling and alcohol abuse. The crackdown also focused on the enforcement of the Disaster Management Act and Liquor Trade Act. Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, has announced that the second phase of the country’s vaccination rollout will begin on 17 May. This, he announced in Gauteng on Thursday, was because millions of vaccine doses  are expected to land in South Africa in the next coming weeks. He said the country has secured a combined 51 million jabs in the agreements that have been signed with various drug makers, aimed at 42 million people.
