Current Rhodes University Shotokan Karate Club President, Lutho Singata (1st dan black belt) was awarded a trophy for Best Senior Male Karateka at the 2017 SASKA National Championships which was held in Cullinan, Gauteng in October last year. Singata received his trophy from UWKSA President and East Cape Shotokan-Ryu Head Instructor, Gary Grapentin. Singata secured the prestigious award by winning six medals at last year’s Championship which included three gold, two silver and and a bronze medal. Kingswood College once again hosted its annual and prestigious Brian Baker 1st Girls’ Water Polo Tournament over the 2-4 February weekend. Created in honour of the late Brian Baker, a popular teacher who brought girls’ water polo to Kingswood, this year’s edition featured 12 teams from around the country in arguably the most competitive and popular events on the Girls’ Water Polo calendar. Once again the Dept of Education has let down the Riebeeck East Combined School in Makana. Last year a delegation was sent to Riebeeck East Combined School to assess plant to build a hostel which would accommodate children from farming areas around Riebeeck East. These learners would be weekly boarders. In this way the school would be fully staffed and all learners in the area would be educated in a healthy and safe environment.
