Jane Bradshaw, the founder and principal of Amasango Career School, is also one of our nominees for Newsmaker of the Year, which will be announced on Tuesday.
Bradshaw has been involved in the education and upliftment of children who come from disadvantaged backgrounds for years, and her tireless work for Amasango has ensured her a strong presence in the pages of Grocott's Mail.
Bradshaw, who worked with street children in East London before she came to Eluxolweni Shelter in Grahamstown, established a local Amasango branch 1995 from two shipping containers on the Eluxolweni premises.
Amasango is a group of government-funded special needs schools for children who have faced trauma and suffering that has created barriers to education that are not easily overcome in the normal schooling system.
It is clear that Bradshaw plays an indispensable role in Grahamstown’s social structure, just as in the lives of every child she comes into contact with: she is invited into their homes and personal lives and is affectionately known as 'Mama Jane'.
