For more than 108 years, Child Welfare has offered hope and safety to vulnerable children and families. But this essential organisation is facing the very real threat of closure.
The Eastern Cape is one of the poorest provinces in South Africa and Makhanda is not exempt from the socioeconomic challenges that plague the region. There is high unemployment, deep poverty and systemic inequality. In such a context, organisations like Child Welfare are not just helpful, they are vital. They provide social work services, child protection, foster care support, early intervention and family preservation programmes to hundreds of children and families every year.
But all of this work costs money: for staff salaries, transport, electricity, administration, compliance and service delivery. And yet, the government has failed to increase subsidies in line with inflation and rising operational costs.
What this means for Child Welfare SA Grahamstown is this organisation will soon be unable to meet its monthly commitments and so the organisation is appealling to private individuals, businesses, churches, alumni, government officials and philanthropic organisations. No amount is too small. R100 can help feed a child; R500 can keep the lights on; R1 000 can support the transport needed to reach families in outlying areas.
