Pro Carmine choir is once again breaking out the sherry and mince pies for all those attending their annual end-of-year concert next Friday (30 November at Christ Church), held in aid of the Grocott’s Mail Christmas Cheer Fund.
The choir says that the programme is a varied one including some old favourites, starting with the rousing Fanfare for Christmas followed by Mendelssohn’s Weihnachten and ending with that homage to overweight poultry, Christmas is Coming. There are also some newer pieces including interesting treatments of traditional carols, The Holly and The Ivy and I Saw Three Ships; two modern arrangements by English composer Peter Gritton – the swinging Follow That Star and an uplifting version of Mary’s Boy Child; and, brand new to the Pro Carmine Christmas list, Gustav Holst’s haunting setting of the medieval poem, Lullay My Liking.
Pro Carmine has once again spent the year raising money through song – including successful concerts in Bathurst (at St John’s Church for the Sunshine Coast Feeding Scheme) and, in October, as part of the annual Christ Church Country Fair. The choir has had several new members join over the past 12 months and is looking forward to more fund-raising and a possible concert in PE in 2019.
Entrance to the concert is free but there will be a collection for the Grocott’s Mail Christmas Cheer Fund which this year is supporting Grahamstown Child Welfare. More specifically, money raised will go to the Ikhaya Losizo Cluster Foster Home Scheme to help them continue to provide a safe and loving environment for 20 vulnerable children between the ages of 2 and 18.
So, come and get yourself into the holiday mood and contribute to an important cause. The concert is at 7pm, Friday 30 November at Christ Church in Speke Street. Come a little early for that drink and mince pie.
