A bad smell and a dog sniffing at a dust-covered bundle led a Grahamstown family to a horrifying discovery in their back garden on Tuesday 20 December.
The owner of the home, who asked not to be identified, said a tenant called her around to alert her to something that was difficult to identify, and smelled bad.
“I was called by a girl who lives in my yard at the back of my house and that is where we found the baby," the home owner said. "We immediately called the police."
The girl told her landlady that she'd noticed a foul smell coming from somewhere near the back of the yard, where she then discovered a dog sniffing at something that was covered in dust and that she could not identify.
“At first we also did not know what we had just found," the owner said. "That is when I called a man who was passing by to come and help us identify what it was. We noticed that it was a human when we realised there were nails and two legs we then immediately contacted the authorities.”
Police arrived and conducted interviews on the scene.
Police spokesperson Captain Mali confirmed that an inquest document docket had been opened following the discovery of the body of a child.
