Two teenagers answered the desperate call of a child at West Beach, Port Alfred, Wednesday 21 December helping to save his mother from drowning.

Cluster commander Brigadier Morgan Govender was conducting a beach patrol when a young boy approached him, begging him to save his mother from drowning, according to spokesperson Captain Mali Govender.

All emergency services were immediately alerted; however, two teenagers in the vicinity asked Govender for permission to assist the woman, who could still be seen from the beach.

They swam in, reached the woman and stayed with her until members of the National Sea Rescue Institute arrived, Captain Govender said.

"The woman was taken to a local hospital and stabilised before being transported to a hospital in Port Elizabeth. Her condition remains critical," Captain Govender said.
