Director of Technical services and Infrastructure at Makana municipality Thembinkosi Myalato said the power cuts in the CBD were a result of an interrupted power supply from Eskom.
"Eskom technicians are currently investigating what caused the cuts" he said.
Makana's electricity comes directly from Eskom before distribution to residents, Myalato said.
Meanwhile Eskom has urged Makana residents to reduce electricity consumption due to an overloaded system created by high consumption by households and businesses across the country.
Provincial spokesperson Ntombekhaya Mafumbata told Grocott's on Thursday that the public should use electricity sparingly, especially between 6pm and 9pm.
"The whole country is currently experiencing frequent power cuts because the consumption at the moment is greater than the supply, Mafumbata said.
Mafumbata said this is because some Eskom power plants are currently not working and are getting unplanned services, creating another major strain.
Mafumbata then said cuts are not the controversial load shedding method which was used in 2008.
Last year in November and December most parts of Grahamstown West were hit by power outages.
Makana communications officer Yoliswa Ramokolo said "People who buy prepaid electricity from the municipality were not affected but only those who pay directly were in the dark."
She explained that the problem went as far as Riebeck East and Alicedale.
In Mid-December businesses operating between High and New streets were hit by recurring power cuts with some shops being without electricity for two days.
