The Literature and Ecology Colloquium is calling for submissions to its 10th edition.
The Colloquium aims to bring together scholars in every field to explore ways in which literatures of all kinds (including non-fiction, scientific, popular, and academic) help us or hinder us in facing current environmental issues and concerns.
It encourages interdisciplinary approaches and welcomes participation by postgraduate students, as well as established
scholars.
"We would especially appreciate involvement of the scientific part of our community," said convenor Dan Wylie.
The extended deadline for abstracts is 20 July 2013.
"The Literature and Ecology Colloquium has achieved a small milestone: its 10th edition," wrote Wylie in an online post. "Since its inception here in 2004, it has migrated around the country, garnering steady support and producing a number of publications of essay collections and journal special issues.
"In 2013 it comes home to Grahamstown."
The 2013 edition of the colloquium takes place from 30 August to 2 September at the Environmental Learning and Research Centre, Rhodes University.
The topic is "Where on Earth Are We (Going)?"
"The topic is broad, but the main aim is to sum up where the Colloquium has got to in its 10 years and to suggest directions for further research in the future," writes Wylie. "To theorise the field of 'eco-criticism' or 'literary ecology'
more than has so far been done; and to build bridges to neighbouring disciplines, even those that might be considered 'non-literary', such as Economics, Politics or Law."
Guest speakers are Prof Byron Caminero-Santangelo, University of Kansas, a world authority on African ecocriticism and in particular South African ecologically-orientated literature.
There will also be an associated Art exhibition, featuring George Kockott sculptures and a range of Eastern Cape artists.
