A local soldier has been selected for the South African Military Health Services (Samhs) soccer team to compete in the Arms of Service championship later this year.

A number of 6 SA Infantry Battalion soldiers represented the Samhs Eastern Cape side recently, but only Masixole Adonis made it onto the national squad.

The Samhs soccer tournament took place at 6 SAI in Grahamstown last week. The EC side lost their first game against defending champions Limpopo 0-5.

They then beat Free State 3-2 before losing their final match 1-3. A number of women's sides also took part in the Samhs tournament.

Now that the Samhs champs are over, Adonis says he plans to brush up on his soccer skills and work on his fitness before the Arms of Service tournament.

Adonis is a member of the 6 SAI soccer side as well as local club Maru, which plays in the Makana football league.

Samhs soccer chairperson, Mark Rawlins, said 6 SAI was selected to host the 2013 champs due to its available facilities.

While he said they couldn't control the weather – it rained on the Wednesday and Thursday – the event was well organised and some good soccer games were witnessed.

While the air force, navy and Samhs teams have been confirmed, the army will only select its team in August. The dates for the army championship are yet to be confirmed.

The Arms of Service champs will take place in Port Elizabeth from 8-13 November 2013, where a men's and a women's soccer side will represent each institution.
