Eastern Cape Shotokan-Ryu Karate Club comprises several smaller karate clubs in the Eastern Cape. It is led by sensei Gary Grapentin and was established in 1992. Anthea Moys started her karate training three months ago and has thus far received her yellow belt.
So far, the Standard Bank Young Artist for Performance Art has single-handedly taken on some of the best talent Grahamstown has to offer.
The award ceremony, where the final score will be announced and medals and trophies awarded, will be at Thomas Pringle hall tomorrow at 3pm.
In her first contest, Anthea Moys vs South African Battle Re-enactment Society (SABRE), she battled 20 British soldiers armed with cannons and muskets, to try and take over the fort. Moys was armed with bagpipes, representing the Scottish rebels. This took place at Fort Selwyn last Saturday and in collaboration with the organisation's head, Basil Mills.
Moys's next challenge took place the same day as she took on four couples in various ballroom dance steps in Anthea Moys vs Ballroom Dancercizers, also at Thomas Pringle hall.
Rhodes DanceSport from Grahamstown and Ta Mtshizz, from Fort Beaufort, joined forces and took on Moys in this contest.
The next day was her choir challenge: the acclaimed Victoria Girls' High School Choir and chamber choir, Pro Carmine Choir.
On Monday, Moys tested her mental and logical skills as she challenged five of the best top chess players from the Rhodes Chess Club. The club is coached by Andrew Martin, a veteran of more than 1 300 tournament matches. The Chess Clubs players regularly compete at competitions across South Africa.
On Wednesday Moys took on a full soccer team in the fifth part of the series, Anthea Moys vs Makana Rhini United.
Moys started training for these contests three months ago.
At the fifth contest, Moys's soccer match, Master of Ceremonies Gerard Bester announced that Moys has yet to win a contest.
Who knows – maybe Moys will be lucky in today's challenge.
