Makhanda’s boxing lovers’ prayers were answered this past weekend as one of their sons won the Eastern Cape featherweight championship at the Ginsberg Community Hall in eQonçe.
Bongani “King Killer” Fule stopped Abelo Tokwe in the fourth round to claim the vacant title.
It was an exciting fight with both boxers going at each other from as early as the first round.
In the second round, Fule dropped Tokwe to the canvas but he quickly recovered. The third round saw Tokwe fighting back and shaking Fule with an overarm. The Makhanda fighter, however, evaded serious trouble. But the punch stunned Fule into action, starting the fourth round like a wounded tiger.
He caught Tokwe with a beautiful solid combination that forced him to kiss the canvas again. He wobbled to his feet but the referee decided he had seen enough and stopped the fight.
Fule was crowned the new featherweight champion.
Speaking to Grocott’s Mail immediately after the fight, Fule said he was over the moon. “I’m so happy right now, my hard work at training has paid off. It was a very tough fight as we both came here to fight and we gave the fans what they expected from us.”
Fule went on to thank his corner men and all those who have always been on his side throughout his boxing journey.
He made special mention of the people of Makhanda who kept him in their prayers.
He also thanked Grocott’s Mail for always keeping Makhandans updated with his progress.
Fule’s next move will be the defence of his title before thinking of challenging for a national championship.
